Doctrid V

UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK,             27th & 28th April, 2017

DOCTRID V surpasses previous Conferences!

The DOCTRID Research Institute and the DOCTRID Conference team would like to thank everyone who attended DOCTRID V Conference in University of Limerick. A special word of thanks to Professor Mary Shire who was an excellent host for the event and provided a great venue and wonderful welcome to us all. Thank you once again to our collegues and friends at Michigan State University for attending in such numbers and a special thank you to Professor Lou Anna Simon for taking time out of her hectic schedule to address the opening of the Conference. We are once more grateful to Professor Ian Gray for his excellent work as MC keeping all on time and encouraging input and collaboration.

The ethos of the Conference and DOCTRID was epitomized by the heartwarming contribution of the ladies of the ALPS group at Lisnagry. Finally, a special word of thanks to the staff at University of Limerick in particular Rita Boland and Karen Kemmy - it was a real pleasure to work with them.

The fifth International DOCTRID conference was held in the Analog Devices Building at University of Limerick on 27th & 28th April 2017 with an unprecedented attendance of over 180 delegates. As in previous years we welcomed speakers and attendees from Great Britain, USA, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, China and Korea along with many guests from the length and breadth of Ireland. In addition to a strong academic participation, there was representation from service providers, voluntary bodies, disability access and special education providers, technology companies, family carers and people with ID and autism.

We were honoured to welcome Dr Jean Frazier of University of Massachusetts Medical School, who gave a very informative Plenary Lecture entitled “Mental Health and Medical Challenges in Autism Spectrum Disorders”

We once again had the opportunity to expand the DOCTRID network by signing MOU's with Athlone Institute of Technology and Kings College London, We welcome them both.

One very important element of this year’s conference was the active participation of the ladies and gentlemen who avail of the services of the Daughters of Charity at Lisnagry. We had a presentation from the ALPS group, which saw them presenting the results of their own research on the topic “Do you like the term Service User?”

We were delighted that so many of the delegates joined us for the Conference Dinner on Thursday evening held at Castletroy Park Hotel  the entertainment for which was provided by -

the Lisnagry Rhythmic Squad

and Patterns Dance Collective.

The focus of this years’ conference was on results and progress and we had presentations from both ASSISTID and Hegarty Fellows on their research to date.
