Professor Brian Harvey honoured with distinguished Chevalier dans l´Ordre des Palmes académiques.

Congratulations to Professor Brian Harvey who on June 28th 2016 received, from the French ambassador, M. Jean-Pierre Thébault, the insignia of Chevalier dans l´Ordre des Palmes académiques (Knighthood of Order Academic Palms), in recognition of his outstanding contribution to French-Irish scientific collaboration.

The award, instigated in March 1808, is a knighthood of France presented to people who have made major contributions to French education and culture.

This is the second time Professor Harvey has been awarded a prestigious national honour from France, having received the “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Merite” from President Jacques Chirac in 2006. Brian maintains a strong bond with France and is a visiting professor at University of Paris V.

The ceremony was held at the RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland), after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding strengthening scientific cooperation between the RCSI, the University of Montpellier, the French Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research(CNRS). The award was made in the presence of the Mr Eamon Maher, Secretary of RCSI, family, friends, representatives from research and the medical world including colleagues from RCSI and the DOCTRID programme.

The award coincides with the final selection call for the ASSISTID programme which is coordinated by the Daughters of Charity Research Institute (DOCTRID), of which Prof Harvey is Director of Research. ASSISTID is an EU Marie Curie research and training programme funding up to 40 postdoctoral researchers who are examining how technology can support people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism in education, employment, community participation and independent living. It is cofunded by the EU and the charity RESPECT.
